Hardware Art

Just as much as I enjoy typing, I enjoy working with my hands on various creative pursuits. I developed this love at a young age, when my sister and I were taken to art workshops and galleries of all kinds when we were younger.

I am especially thankful that my parents spent the time to ensure that my sister and I spent a lot of quality time inside of museums. The opportunity to see works from the great masters of old inspires all kinds of emotional expressions from those who have the opportunity to walk in front of a work from Claude Monet or Salvador Dali. (It is worth noting for those who enjoy the melting clocks painting from Dali that it is TINY compared to what you’d think it would be. I’m talking notebook page-sized. No big canvas for that one, just prints.)

My artistic expression over the past couple of years have brought together my love of technology and a lot of broken items I needed to get rid of or do something with.

So I began creating what I’m calling “Hardware Art.” I’m sure real artists would probably call this mix medium sculpture. Honestly, the pieces are essentially computer parts I glued onto canvases of various sizes from Dollar Tree with the hope it might resemble something to someone besides myself.

I’ve been working on these at various points over the past two years, with plans to create more items in the next few months as I continue the task of jettisoning items that have been piling up with “plans” to do something with them.

Let’s start with a few I know I have featured before, these “display pieces” I thought would pair nicely with the variety of computer tech I have around my work area.

In case you’re wondering: from top to bottom, we have memory sticks from a laptop and desktop, the “system on a chip” motherboard from an old smartphone, and two CPUs (one AMD, one Intel.)

From there, I created the next two items.

First was the inside of a laptop. It like the ones above doesn’t have a “name” as a piece of work, per se. It was mainly created because the laptop in question was long gone and I needed to do something with the parts. If it had a name, maybe it would be something like “Digital Taxonomy.”

After that, I created what I’m calling “Smiley Phone.” The name should be apparent.

And in the past couple of months, I finally finished one more item that (at least to me) looks like a crazy sea creature, so I’m calling it “Big Fish.”

I don’t have a specific reason for why I’ve been creating these “art” pieces, but it has been fun. I’ve got a few more in mind to put together, so stay tuned for an update.

IF for some reason anyone happens to be interested in this at all and wants a piece created of their own, leave a comment. Maybe I’ll respond.
